We need an immunity- boost as winter and flu season are upon us…

This green smoothie is one of my personal favorites, and will help you do just that. With ingredients such as spinach, parsley,  ginger, cucumber, lime, and aloe vera – It gives the perfect immunity -boost and keeps me healthy all year round.

Cold-Fighting Green Smoothie

(Serves 1)

Ingredients:

* 1 handful spinach
* 2 limes, peeled
* 2 tsp. ginger, peeled & grated
* 1 Persian cucumber
* 1 small handful parsley
* 1 small apple
* 1 cup water
* 1 Tbsp. aloe vera

Method:

1) Combine all the ingredients in a blender, and blend until you see a smooth consistency. Add additional water to reach desired texture.

2) Serve & ENJOY!!!

So how does this smoothie help with your immune system and act as a cold fighting gem?

Spinach: Spinach is a good source of Beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that protects the body from damaging molecules called free radicals. Free radicals damage cells through a process known as oxidation. Beta-carotene is a pigment found in plants that gives them their color. In the body, beta-carotene converts into vitamin A (retinol). We need vitamin A for good vision and eye health, for a strong immune system, and for healthy skin and mucous membranes. Find other foods that are high in beta carotene here!

Ginger: Ginger has been found to help balance the immune system and to restore it to proper functioning. It has also been found to enhance the protective functions of the immune system. Fresh ginger stimulates the respiratory cells in our bodies to secrete an anti-viral protein called interferon-beta. Ginger also inhibits mucus production and helps clear up congestion, making it a perfect weapon for cold and flu season.

Limes: Limes contain potassium, calcium, magnesium, and vitamins A, B, C, and D. According to The University of Maryland Medical Center, potassium is an important mineral for the proper function of all cells, tissues, and organs in the human body. Without cell-function support, our bodies won’t be able to fight off illness and disease.

Parsley: Parsley has been used as a natural detox remedy, diuretic, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent for centuries in folk and eastern medicine. The vitamins and minerals that make up parsley are what allows it to unlock so many health benefits in our bodies. Ingredients such as: magnesium, potassium, calcium, folate, iron, vitamins K, C and A, make parsley an excellent ingredient for disease-prevention and immunity.

Aloe Vera: The gel of the aloe vera plant contains vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12. Vitamin B12 is found in very few plants, making it an optimal supplement for vegans who otherwise have a hard time getting this vitamin from non-supplement, whole-food sources. There are also 20 minerals that our bodies need in aloe gel including calcium, copper, chromium, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, selenium, and zinc. As that gel moves through your digestive tract, it absorbs and removes toxins, acting as a great natural detoxifier and cleansing agent. It sounds like this is the perfect addition to our immunity -boosting green smoothie!

nt intake for building your body’s defenses, because your detoxifying organs (kidneys and liver) need water to function. Without it, they won’t flush waste and toxins out of your system. And, there’s another factor at play…Lymph fluid helps get white blood cells and nutrients to different parts of your body, and can’t produce it without enough water. Not having enough water in your detoxifying organs can cause the waste it traps to get stuck! This makes you more likely to becoming sick, and makes our immune systems work harder than they have to. So, eat up my friends! Who knew cucumbers were so powerful?
