MINDFUL EATING TO ENJOY THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Starting at birth, we are capable of recognizing fullness or satiation. But how does this in fact work? How do we take advantage of mindful eating?

When the stomach receives food, hormones get released into the blood. When these hormones reach a certain level, neurological signals are sent to the brain to tell you that you don’t need to consume any more energy from food. It takes about 20 minutes after you start eating for the message to stop eating to reach your brain, however. This is where it gets tricky — If you eat too quickly, your brain might receive this message a tad too late. Therefore, you may eat more than you need or want to.

This is unfortunately one of the contributing factors to unnecessary weight gain. So try to be conscious of your eating habits and put down your fork between bites, maybe even count 5 chews before you swallow! This is the basic principal of mindful eating.

HERE ARE SOME “FALSE ALARM??? SENSATIONS THAT ARE OFTEN CONFUSED WITH STOMACH HUNGER.

TEETH HUNGER

Sometimes if we’re feeling irritated or stressed, we want to chew our frustrations away.

MOUTH HUNGER

We see or smell something that looks so delicious that our mouths start to water.

MIND HUNGER

We look at the clock and think we have to eat a certain amount of food because “it’s time???, even if we don’t feel like eating.

THIRST

Sometimes we confuse dehydration with actual hunger. The body is calling for fluids, not food.

FATIGUE

When we sense that our energy levels are low, some of us automatically think that if we eat something, we’ll feel better.

EMOTIONAL HUNGER

When we feel emptiness in our hearts we try to fill the void with food.
Moving forward, try to be mindful and identify true stomach hunger. Learning to eat intuitively — meeting your body’s true physical needs for fuel and nourishment — will help you naturally reach the healthiest weight for your body.
